What it’s like

Bouldering walls, circuit boards and a Rockers Club drop-in for kids from 4, with NICAS courses if they get keen.

This is a bouldering gym rather than a roped climbing centre, so no harnesses to fuss with, just walls low enough to fall off safely and mats underneath. Kids climb on circuit boards, Kilter and MoonBoards alongside the games and challenges the coaches set, and there's a Rockers Club drop-in aimed at ages 4 and up if you want to try before committing to anything longer.

For anyone who takes to it, the NICAS Bouldering programme is the obvious next step, a proper certified progression scheme rather than just more climbing. It runs as six sessions for £105 or a full 12-week term at £255, and the site is honest that even a strong young climber gets something from working through the levels with a coach rather than skipping ahead.

A single under-18 entry is £9, which is fair for a session's climbing, and an intro lesson in a small group is £20 if nobody's climbed before. If your child ends up hooked, the monthly membership at £55 for under-18s covers all four Climbing District London sites, which starts to look sensible if you're going weekly. There's a café on site for the wait, and wifi if you're planning to sit and work through it.

One thing worth flagging: there's no age range given for general entry, so it's worth going by the Rockers Club age of 4+ as your steer for younger kids, and the NICAS terms suit the ones who want to keep coming back rather than a one-off visit.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£9 for a single under-18 entry, £12.50 concession, £15 for an adult. An intro lesson in a small group is £20.

Is there anything for younger kids?

Rockers Club is a drop-in session pitched at ages 4 and up.

What's NICAS Bouldering and is it worth it?

It's a certified climbing progression scheme with coaches working at your child's own pace. Six sessions run £105 or you can do a full 12-week term for £255, and the site reckons even confident climbers get something from it rather than skipping levels.

Is membership worth it over single entries?

Under-18 monthly membership is £55 and covers all four Climbing District London sites, so it pays off quickly if you're climbing weekly rather than once a month.

Do we need to book ahead?

That's not something covered here, but if you've climbed at Stronghold in the last two years you won't need to re-register at The Arch.

Is there food on site?

There's a café on site for coffee or a snack while you wait.

Can we visit other Climbing District sites on the same ticket?

A day pass lets you visit all four London centres in one day if you fancy an ambitious circuit, and any membership covers all four sites too.
