What it’s like

A proper cinema with screenings built round babies, toddlers and school-holiday film clubs rather than squeezed in as an afterthought.

This isn't a soft play with a screen bolted on, it's a normal cinema that's worked out how to make room for small kids without annoying everyone else. Baby Club is for under-12s, with the sound turned down and the lights kept soft, and your ticket comes with a hot drink and a slice of cake or popcorn thrown in. Toddler Club does the same trick for the 1 to 5s, though each ticket counts as two, one for you and one for the toddler, so it's worth knowing before you count up the cost.

Outside those dedicated slots, babies under 12 months get in free to any U or PG film before 5pm, any day of the week. After 5pm they're not allowed in at all, which is fair enough for the evening crowd but worth building your day around if you're planning a later screening. School holidays bring Family Film Club, aimed at 5 to 14 year olds, with child tickets half price and no cap on how many kids can claim it. There are also Relaxed Screenings for anyone who needs the lights up, the sound down and the freedom to move about and make noise.

The building itself is a few minutes from Waverley station and the St Andrew Square tram stop, with paid parking at St James Quarter if you're driving in. Step-free access covers screens 2 to 5 and both bars, but Screen 1's upper tier circle isn't step-free, so a buggy might mean asking at the door which screen you're actually in. Expect up to half an hour of ads and trailers before the film starts, longer for special events, which is either a chance to settle a toddler in or a reason to time your loo trip badly.

One to flag: it's your own food and drink bought at the cinema only, no outside snacks smuggled in, and bookings are non-refundable so double-check the date before you pay the £2.50 booking fee.

Plan your visit

Can we bring a baby to a normal screening?

Yes, under-12 months go free to any U or PG film before 5pm, every day. After 5pm babies aren't allowed into any screening.

What's Toddler Club and how does the pricing work?

It's for 1 to 5 year olds, with dimmed lights and lower volume, and a hot drink plus cake or popcorn included. Each ticket covers two people, so you're really buying a ticket for yourself and one for the toddler.

Can we get a refund if plans change?

No refunds on bookings. You can sometimes amend a booking if you ask at least 24 hours before the film starts.

Is it step-free for a buggy or wheelchair?

Screens 2 to 5 and both bars are step-free. Screen 1's upper tier circle isn't, so check which screen you're booked into if that matters to you.

What about parking and getting there without a car?

There's paid parking at St James Quarter with disabled access. Waverley station is about 4 minutes on foot and the St Andrew Square and York Place tram stops are close by too.

When does Family Film Club run?

During school holidays, at off-peak times, with child tickets half price for 5 to 14 year olds.
