What it’s like

A locked-room puzzle hunt for 60 minutes, best saved for kids of 8 and up who like a proper brain-bender.

You and your team get shut in a themed room and have an hour to find clues, crack puzzles and get out before the clock runs down. There's a City Hunt option too, an outdoor version that takes the puzzle-solving onto the streets, open to all ages rather than just the over-8s, running 1.5 to 2 hours with briefing and lounge time either side.

The room games are pitched at 8 and up, and anyone under 18 needs a paying adult in there with them, so this isn't one for a family day out with a toddler in tow. What it's good for is a group of eight-year-olds and older who fancy something a bit different from the usual soft play or trampoline park, the sort where a nine-year-old who's into puzzles will remember the final lock clicking open long after they've forgotten the price.

Budget for around 90 minutes all in. Fifteen minutes gets swallowed by waivers and getting sorted before you go in, then 60 minutes in the room itself, and afterwards there's a lounge and bar area to hang about in for photos. Pricing drops the more of you there are, from £30 a head for two players down to £21 for six, so it pays to round up a full team rather than turn up as a pair. Card only, no cash, worth remembering if you're the type to carry a fiver for emergencies.

It's a five minute walk from Waverley station and there's parking at the OMNi Centre, so getting there isn't the faff it can be with some city centre attractions. Booking's required rather than optional, and there are no refunds if a booked player doesn't show, which stings a bit if plans change last minute.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

It works on a sliding scale per head, so two players pay £30 each while a full team of six drops to £21 each. City Hunt games are £15 a player.

How long does it take?

Around 90 minutes all in for the escape rooms, with 60 of those minutes actually in the room. City Hunt games run 1.5 to 2 hours out on the streets, so allow 2.5 hours total with briefing.

What age is it suitable for?

Escape rooms are pitched at 8 and up, and anyone under 18 needs a paying adult over 18 in the room with them. City Hunt games are open to all ages, with under-8s going free alongside two paying players.

Do we need to book in advance?

Yes, booking's required rather than turn-up-and-play. There's no refund if a booked player fails to show, so it's worth chasing up your team beforehand.

Can I pay with cash?

Card only, no cash accepted, so leave the coin jar at home.

Is there parking nearby?

The OMNi Centre car park is the one to use, and it's a five minute walk from Waverley station if you're coming by train.

Can I add someone to my booking later?

You can add an extra person on the day as long as you stay within the room's maximum, no need to warn the venue in advance. They just pay by card when they arrive.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Many of the rooms are set up for up to two wheelchair users at once, and a registered carer supporting a player gets in free.

What does a birthday party include?

Packages run from £20 a head for after-school weekday slots up to £32 for weekends and evenings, covering the room, free drinks and electronic invites. Groups of 10 or more get the birthday guest in free.

Can you play if pregnant or with a medical condition?

Games masters watch every room on CCTV so you can step out if you need to. Some rooms use smoke machines, strobes or lasers, so flag any medical conditions when you book.
