What it’s like
Locked in a room for sixty minutes with your team, racing to solve puzzles and find the way out before time runs out.
You and your team get shut in a themed room with sixty minutes on the clock. The way out is hidden behind a string of riddles and clues, and nobody's coming to help unless you ask for it. It's built for teams of two to six, though at Haymarket, Ocean's Escape and 8 Years Later only take up to five players, so check which room you've booked before you promise your six-a-side family team a spot.
The price drops the bigger your group gets, from £30 a head for two people down to £23 each if you can rally six, with £28, £26 and £24 for three, four and five. That sliding scale makes it worth roping in another family or a few cousins rather than going as a pair. Doors are open Monday to Sunday, 8am to 5pm, which gives you plenty of slots to pick from across the week.
The site says there's no official age cutoff, but puzzles can be tough going for under-tens, and this one's really pitched at ages 10 to 15. Anyone under 16 needs an adult in the room with them, so this isn't a drop-and-go activity. Budget an hour and a half in total rather than just the sixty minutes advertised, since that covers the briefing before you go in and the debrief afterwards about where you got stuck.
Access is the thing to sort out first if it matters to you. At Morrison Street, Houdini's Workshop sits up two small steps on the ground floor and might not suit a larger wheelchair, while the other three rooms there are in the basement with no wheelchair access. At Haymarket, Ocean's Escape is fully accessible on the ground floor but the other two rooms are in the basement, and the downstairs toilets aren't accessible either. Parking at Morrison Street means nearby NCP or Q-Park car parks with fees attached, while Haymarket has pay and display on side streets that's free on Sundays and evenings.
