What it’s like

Flat towpaths round three lakes for a slow walk and some birdwatching, with free parking on site.

Three lakes with towpaths round them make this an easy one for a pushchair or a scooter, no big hills to fight with. Bring binoculars if you have them, the site lists birdwatching as one of the things people come for, and the water draws in enough birdlife to keep a curious kid occupied without you having to entertain them yourself.

There's no set trail time here, it just depends how far round you fancy going. A short lap suits a toddler who wants to point at ducks, a longer circuit gives an older kid room to scoot ahead and wait at the next bend. Parking's free on site, which is one less thing to budget for on a day out.

If you fancy leaving the car at home, the train station is roughly 15 minutes from the lakeside, a decent stretch of the legs before you even start the walk proper. Toilets are on site too, which matters more than people admit when you've got a small one on the last stretch back to the car.
