What it’s like
A West End stage for musicals and big theatrical shows, but under 5s aren't let in at all.
This is a proper theatre trip rather than a soft play afternoon out. Kids watch a full musical or theatrical production on a big West End stage, with an interval to stretch legs and grab a drink. The Devil Wears Prada The Musical, for instance, runs about two and a half hours including a twenty minute interval, so a 7.30pm show usually wraps up around 10pm, which is late for a school night with younger children.
Under 5s cannot be admitted at all, and any child aged 15 or under needs an adult with them, one adult per ten children if you're bringing a group. Booster seats are available for £1 if you've got a smaller child who needs the lift. The building itself is listed, so there's no air conditioning, just an air cooling system, which is worth bearing in mind on a warm evening in a packed auditorium.
Arrive with time to spare. The bars and auditorium open about 45 minutes before curtain up, and they want you there 30 minutes early, because latecomers might not get seated until a natural break in the show. There's a cloakroom on the circle level for coats and bags, but it's £2 an item, which adds up if you've come as a family. You can bring in soft drinks in plastic bottles and cold snacks, but nothing bought outside gets past the foyer.
Getting there is straightforward, with Tottenham Court Road station right opposite. If you're driving, there's a discount code for nearby parking and a separate scheme that knocks up to half off at Q-Park, plus disabled bays close by. Wheelchair users have proper options too, including street level box seating and stalls seats reached by a lift, with an in-house wheelchair on hand if needed.
