What it’s like
A proper steam train ride around Chasewater on nearly four miles of track, with a museum and model railway to fill the gaps between trains.
The main event is a round trip on the railway, about 45 minutes there and back along the edge of Chasewater. It's not a long ride, so don't build a whole day around the train itself, but there's a museum and heritage centre to wander round while you wait for the next departure, and if you time it right there's a G gauge model railway running on Sundays that'll go down well with anyone who likes their trains in miniature too.
Under-3s travel free outside special events, and a family ticket for two adults and two kids comes to £25, which works out cheaper than paying separately if you've got a couple of children in tow. Dogs ride free as well, which is a nice touch if you're bringing the family mutt along for the walk round the reservoir afterwards.
Weekends are the better bet if you want a proper look round, open 10am to 4:30pm, while weekdays it's tea room only rather than a full day out. The tea room does hot and cold food seven days a week, though hot food runs out and last orders are around 3pm, so don't leave lunch too late if you're planning on a cooked meal. Parking's free at Brownhills West station, and wheelchair users can get on via a ramp, with room for up to six wheelchairs on a train, though on gala days the older rolling stock sometimes gets used instead and access can be more limited.
Tickets are usually good for any timed train that day, but galas, Santa specials and other special events run on their own pricing and rules, so a normal day ticket won't necessarily get you on those.
