What it’s like

A short train ride round the woods on a members-run miniature railway, with picnic spots and open days announced on Facebook.

Hop on a miniature train and take a loop through woodland, the kind of ride that's over quickly but gets asked for again straight away. There's space to spread out a picnic once you're off, and the woodland setting makes it feel like more of an outing than just a few minutes on a train.

Rides are £3 each, or £15 for a six-ride ticket if you know you'll want to go round more than once. It's cash only, so don't turn up relying on a card. Open days are announced on Facebook and depend on the weather and enough volunteers being around to run things, so it's not somewhere you can plan a visit to weeks ahead with total certainty. Saturdays from 11am to 4pm are when prospective members can come along, which is worth knowing if anyone in the family fancies getting more involved than just riding the trains.

If you're after a birthday party, they do exclusive two-hour hire that includes train rides, use of the clubhouse kitchen and a station master keeping things running, for £220. You'll need to book ahead for that. Parking's free and there are toilets on site, and picnicking is actively encouraged rather than just tolerated.
