Ashton Court Miniature Railway

WHERE
Bristol
What it’s like
A small-gauge railway looping round Ashton Court, with rides sold singly or in a block of five.
This is a proper miniature railway rather than a ride-on-a-loop-and-that's-it job, and the whole point is the train itself. A single trip round is £1.75, or you can get five rides for £7.50, which works out cheaper if you know your kids will want to go straight back round again the second they get off.
It only runs on public running days, from midday to 5pm, so this isn't one to turn up to on a whim without checking when it's actually operating. Weather matters too. They post updates on Facebook or you can ring ahead if it looks iffy, since it's an outdoor track and adverse conditions can stop it running altogether.
Getting there by car is the only sensible option, in through the Clifton Lodge Gatehouse, and parking is free at the Ashton Court Golf Course entrance. On payment, they take card and cash separately, so it's not a case of either working on the day, more that you'd want to check which the railway itself is set up for before you go, rather than assuming both.
There's not much else to plan around: no booking system, just a straightforward pay-and-ride setup once you're on site. It suits a short visit rather than a whole afternoon, unless you're doing the five-ride pack and making a proper session of it.
