What it’s like

Free railway heritage stop where kids can climb aboard a vintage coach and stand on the footplate of a real shunter engine.

This one's built around getting hands and feet onto actual railway kit rather than looking at it behind glass. There's a vintage BR Mk1 Coach to explore and Marjorie, a Sentinel shunter, where kids can stand right on the footplate. There's a small play area too, plus railway toys to play with, so a visit isn't just trudging round looking at engines.

It's free to get in, which is the sort of detail that makes a rainy Saturday decision easy. The catch is the opening hours: weekends and bank holidays only, 11am to 4pm, so this isn't a weekday filler if you're stuck for something to do on a Tuesday. Ramp access from the road and movable seating in the trucks mean it's genuinely workable with a wheelchair or buggy, which not every heritage spot bothers to get right.

If you fancy arriving by bike or on foot rather than driving, Yatton Station is five miles off along the Strawberry Line and has cycle access through to the centre, which makes for a decent excuse to turn the visit into a proper outing rather than a quick stop.
