Brandon Reach Nature Reserve

What it’s like
A free wander through wild habitats where you might spot a woodpecker, a grass snake or a carpet of spring bluebells.
There's no ticket booth here and no playground either. What you get is a waymarked route through genuinely wild ground, the sort of place where the interest is in what turns up rather than what's built. The site lists greater spotted woodpeckers and grass snakes among the residents, and in spring the bluebells are apparently worth the trip on their own.
It suits kids who like looking rather than climbing. A six-year-old with a pair of binoculars or a nature spotter sheet will get more out of this than one after slides and swings, and there's nothing stopping a buggy either, since the route uses kissing gates and radar gates for off-road wheelchair access. Bring your own snacks though, since there's nothing about food on site.
Parking is free at the Brandon Marsh car park, though it only runs during visitor centre opening hours unless you're a member with 24-hour access. Dogs are welcome on close leads once you're through the gates, but not in the car park itself, so if you're planning a dog walk with the kids in tow, sort that out before you arrive. One genuine catch: the reserve doesn't connect through to Piles Coppice, so don't plan a route assuming it does.
Given the free entry and the wildlife spotting angle, this is more a morning add-on than a full day out, but it's an easy one to do without much planning.
