What it’s like

A scout campsite near Leeds with a 40ft climbing tower, pedal karts, low ropes and axe throwing for groups camping or visiting for the day.

This one's built for groups rather than a single family turning up on a whim. Think scout troops, guide packs, cadet units, school groups, all camping or day-visiting together and working through a proper list of activities. The big one is Andrew's Tower, a 40ft triangular climbing tower with abseiling, and it's the sort of thing that gets talked about on the minibus home. There are pedal karts too, standard ones for the over-eights and smaller karts for younger children, plus a low ropes course with a cargo net, balancing beams and a zip wire.

Younger sections aren't an afterthought. Squirrel Square has a mini climbing wall, a mud kitchen, a willow tunnel and a digging area, and there's a wildlife search activity built around map navigation for the younger groups while the older ones are on the tower. Soft archery and soft axe throwing use suction cups and heavy-duty targets, so it's not as alarming as it sounds, and there's a proper archery range and tomahawk throwing range for when confidence builds. Crate stacking and pioneering with poles round out the team-building side, though for pioneering you'll need to bring your own ropes and sacking.

Camping here comes with a few rules worth knowing before you plan around them. The climbing tower has a minimum age of 6, so a four-year-old in the group will be on Squirrel Square instead. Caravans need prior arrangement and there's no electric hook-up or chemical toilet emptying, which catches people out. Day visitors need to be off site by 11pm, and if you're staying over Sunday departure is normally 4:30pm. There's a BBQ griddlery area with covered seating for up to 32 if you're bringing your own food, and only service dogs are allowed on the campsite itself, with domestic pets restricted to the stoned car park areas.

Plan your visit

How old do kids need to be for the activities?

The site runs activities for ages 4 to 18. The climbing tower has its own minimum age of 6, so younger ones stick to Squirrel Square and the wildlife search instead.

Can we bring a caravan?

Only by prior arrangement, and there's no electric hook-up or facility to empty chemical toilets, so plan around that.

What time do we need to leave?

Day visitors must be off site by 11pm. If you're camping over a Sunday, standard departure is 4:30pm.

Is there food on site?

You bring your own food to cook. There's a BBQ griddlery area with covered seating for up to 32 people.

Can we bring dogs?

Only service dogs are allowed on the campsite itself. Domestic pets are restricted to the stoned car park areas.

Is alcohol allowed?

Adults directly responsible for young people must not drink, and under-18s aren't permitted alcohol on site at all.

Is this for individual families or groups?

It's set up for group bookings, camping or activity visits, rather than a single family dropping in.
