What it’s like

Public skating sessions and Learn to Skate lessons on the ice, plus weekend birthday parties with food thrown in.

The ice is the whole point here. Public sessions let anyone have a go, and if your child fancies getting properly good at it there are Learn to Skate lessons on offer too. It's the sort of place where a wobbly first go on skates turns into a party booking a few months later once they've found their feet.

Speaking of parties, that's clearly a big part of what they do. Weekend slots run at four set times, two on Saturday and two on Sunday, each two and a half hours long, with a party area, skate hire and a party co-ordinator thrown in. You'll need at least 10 children and no more than 25, and nobody over 13 can join in, so it's not one for a mixed group with an older cousin tagging along. Food is either a cold buffet at £13.50 a head or a hot meal at £16.50, and adult skate hire is £2.70 if a grown-up wants to join in too.

The booking terms are worth knowing before you commit: they want two weeks' notice minimum, and the deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. Outside of parties there's a café for a sit-down, and the venue lists itself as wheelchair accessible.

If you're after skating aids to help a nervous beginner stay upright, those are only available during family sessions and come with an extra fee, so factor that in if wobbly ankles are a concern.
