What it’s like
Axe throwing, electric darts and crazy golf under one roof, with a curfew that turns the place adults-only after early evening.
This one's a mixed bag depending on when you turn up. Before 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays, or 7pm the rest of the week, under-18s can join in on the augmented reality axe throwing, electric darts, shuffleboard and crazy golf, as long as there's an adult with them. After that cut-off it switches to strictly 18+, so this is very much a daytime plan if you're bringing the kids rather than an evening one.
The games themselves sound like proper fun for a family that likes a bit of competition. Axe throwing and electric darts both use augmented reality, which should keep teenagers interested longer than a standard game of pool, and there's beer or Prosecco pong too if the grown-ups fancy a go once the kids are off doing crazy golf. A BOOM Bundle covering a game, food and drinks comes to £27.50 a head, or you can just grab the £10 meal deal of chicken tenders, fries and a drink if you're not bothered about the games.
It's a cashless venue, so leave the loose change at home and bring a card. Walk-ins are welcome but they'd rather you booked ahead, especially for evenings and bigger groups, and online bookings get paid in full upfront. Worth knowing before you commit: bookings are non-refundable, and there's a £10 per person fee if you no-show or cancel late, so it's not the venue to book on a maybe.
Parking is a short walk rather than on the doorstep, with the NCP on Westgate Street five to ten minutes away, and both main taxi ranks are just two minutes from the door if you're coming in from further out. For birthdays, the birthday person goes free in groups of six or more, which takes a bit of the sting out of the £27.50pp packages.
