What it’s like
A second-hand bookshop in the city centre where every purchase goes towards Amnesty's work, browsing costs nothing.
This is a proper browsing shop, not a quick-in-quick-out one. Shelves of second-hand books to dig through, plus greetings cards and gifts that are ethically sourced, so it's worth going in with no fixed plan and seeing what turns up. There's no set age range given, but it suits kids who are past the board-book stage and old enough to potter about shelves without needing constant entertaining, the sort who'll happily hunt for something themselves rather than be handed it.
Entry costs nothing and there's no booking to sort beforehand, you just walk in during opening hours. It's open Monday to Saturday from 10 till 5, and a shorter stretch on Sunday, 11 till 3, so a Sunday morning dash across town won't work.
It's four minutes on foot from Central Station and six from the bus station, which makes it an easy add-on if you're already in town rather than a special trip. Parking right outside isn't an option, but there are meters and car parks nearby if you're driving in. The shop itself is step-free and wheelchair accessible from the street, with toilets on site, which isn't always a given for a small high street shop.
