Bellever Forest

What it’s like
Easy woodland trails with Dartmoor ponies to spot and river spots for a picnic, right by Bellever Tor.
This is proper walk-it-off-yourself forest, not a visitor centre with an activity board. The paths are easy going, which matters if you've got a buggy or little legs that tire fast, and they open out to views of Bellever Tor if you fancy pushing on further. Along the way there's a decent chance of spotting the native Dartmoor ponies that graze the area, which tends to be the bit that sticks with kids afterwards more than the walk itself.
Picnic tables are dotted near the car park and along the East Dart riverbank, so you can plan the walk around lunch rather than carrying it the whole way. Dogs are welcome throughout. There's no food on site.
The catch is parking. It's card or contactless only through the RingGo app or a pay on foot machine, so don't turn up expecting to feed coins into a machine. It's £3.30 for up to two hours, £5.50 for up to four, or £6.50 for the whole day, and there are no designated accessible parking bays, which is worth knowing if that affects you. Car park and toilets are open 9:30am to 5pm daily, and if you're the sort who visits often, the national membership at £8 a month works out sensibly for repeat trips.
