Belle Vue Park Tea Rooms
WHERE
Newport
What it’s like
A park café with gardens to wander, a play area for the kids, and wicker-basket picnics you book ahead.
There's a play area for the kids to head to first, then gardens with rockeries and little bridges to wander through once they've had enough of the slide. It's the sort of visit where you don't need a plan, just a walk, a play and somewhere to sit down after.
That somewhere is the tea rooms themselves, doing artisan afternoon teas you can eat in, take away or have boxed up as a gift. If you fancy something a bit more of an occasion, they'll do you a picnic in a wicker basket with a blanket thrown in, sandwiches, cheese and biscuits, crisps, savouries and a brownie or blondie, plus hot or cold drinks. You get the basket back by 4pm, which is worth remembering if you're the sort who loses track of time on a nice afternoon.
Come summer, Sunday afternoons turn into Streetfood Sundays, 2pm to 5.30pm with live music, craft beer, cocktails and streetfood vans, more of an adults-with-kids-in-tow event than a toddler outing. There's also a monthly artisan food and craft market on the first Sunday, and a Christmas market with Santa in December that's worth building a day around if you're local.
It's dog friendly and there's a picnic area if you'd rather bring your own food than order any, so a family with a dog and a fussy eater can both be happy at once.
