The Dolman Theatre
WHERE
Newport
What it’s like
A local stage for family musicals and theatre, with Newsies among the shows on the bill.
This is a proper theatre for a family show, not a hall with a stage bolted on. From what they list, you're looking at family musicals and theatrical productions, with Newsies currently on the bill, all paperboys and big dance numbers rather than anything scary for younger ones.
There's indoor seating and toilets on site, which covers the basics for an evening out with kids without you having to plan around anything fancier. No word on food, so I'd eat before you go or budget for an interval treat if there's a kiosk once you're in.
Parking is the one bit that needs a moment's thought. There's no car park attached to the theatre itself, so you're looking at the waterfront or one of the nearby multi-storeys, which is fine if you factor in a short walk but a faff if you're juggling a pushchair and a five-year-old who's already in their best shoes.
Booking is online, and for a show like this I'd get it done ahead rather than hope for the door. It's the kind of night where the actual seeing-a-live-show bit is what sticks, more than any extra bells and whistles.
