What it’s like

Clay workshops where kids hand-build and paint pottery, with a wheel session for the over-tens and food from Layers Bakery thrown in.

You turn up, get fed, then get your hands dirty. The evening sessions start with half an hour of complimentary food and drink from Layers Bakery before you get stuck into an hour of clay work with guidance from the team on hand. For younger ones it's hand-building and painting; for kids ten and up there's a proper pottery wheel workshop, though an adult needs to be on it with them.

There are two ways to do this. The Creative Clay ticket at £10 is air-dry clay you take home the same day, decorative only, so no eating your breakfast off it. The Kiln Fired Clay option at £25 gets you two visits, the make and then a painting session 1 to 12 weeks later, and comes back properly glazed and food-safe, dishwasher and oven friendly. That's a decent stretch of time to build up the excitement for the second half.

Sessions run Monday to Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons, which is a fairly narrow window if you're trying to fit this around school pickup or a weekend outing. Parking is limited to two cars on a first come first served basis, so if you're driving, get there early and flag security when you arrive. If you're coming by DLR, Canning Town or East India stations both work, with the Bow Creek exit and red bridge the route in from Canning Town.

Family workshops crop up too, terrazzo dinosaurs and butterflies among them, which is a nice change from plain pots if you've got kids who've done the clay thing before.
