What it’s like
Free galleries to wander plus proper art courses, from gouache to drawing basics, in the middle of Norwich.
Two light-filled galleries sit at the heart of this place, and you don't pay to look round either of them. It's a decent stop if you're already in the city centre and fancy something quieter than the shops, and it won't cost you a penny unless you fall for something in the gift shop.
Where the money goes is the courses. A four-session Introduction to Gouache runs £130, and there's a four-week Art Essentials course at £135. These aren't drop-in kids' craft sessions, they're proper classes, and the site lists them as being for all ages, so a teenager keen on art could sit alongside an adult beginner. If you've got a younger child who just wants to look at paintings rather than sign up for a course, the galleries themselves are the reason to come.
It's open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sundays 10am to 4pm, though on the last day of any exhibition the galleries shut at 4pm instead. Worth knowing it occasionally closes altogether for weddings and functions, so it's not a guaranteed open door every single day. There's a café on site for a coffee and a sit down after you've done a lap of the galleries.
Parking is the bit that stings a little. The metered spots on Fishergate and Colegate aren't cheap, and you're better off heading for one of the proper car parks nearby, Colegate, Magdalen, St Andrew's Multi-Storey or St Helen's Wharf. It's about a 14 minute walk from the train station if you'd rather leave the car behind, and just a few minutes from the city centre.
