Gardens & Arboretums in Leicester
None of these are actually in Leicester, so it's a case of picking a longer trip out and making a day of it. Two are a drive out to Nottingham: the Arboretum has flat paths through more than 800 trees and sits right by the tram stops, free to wander, while Green's Windmill lets kids climb a working mill and try science experiments in the garden, also free. Out at Langar, Naturescape Wildflower Farm has two ponds, a play area and a tearoom for cake once everyone's tired. A longer trip out to Ticknall gets you Calke Abbey, 600 acres of parkland with cycling trails and a house to potter round. For free days out, the Arboretum, the windmill and Naturescape all cost nothing to enter. Calke Abbey asks from £4.25 but gives you the most space to roam and proper cycling trails. Toddlers will do best at the windmill or Naturescape, both with dedicated play areas, while older kids and dogs are well suited to the Arboretum's flat, step-free paths.
