Tours, Trails & Treasure Hunts in Leeds

Most of the free trails here are close in. Sugarwell Hill Park is only about two kilometres out, a hilltop walk with city views, room for dogs and space to picnic. Post Hill, a bit further at five kilometres, has woodland paths, mountain bike routes and gritstone crags for scrambling. Out at eight and twelve kilometres, Adel Dam Nature Reserve and Townclose Hills Nature Reserve both cost nothing to enter, with bird hides at Adel Dam for spotting woodpeckers or kingfishers, and woodland and grassland at Townclose Hills for a butterfly and bird hunt. For toddlers, Sugarwell Hill's easy paths and picnic space are the simplest choice, and the free walking tour out at Harrogate, through Valley Gardens and its Second World War history, is aimed at under fives specifically, so older children may find it a bit thin. Post Hill's crags and bike routes suit anyone confident scrambling or riding rather than a first outdoor trail. All five are free to join, so the real choice is distance and how rugged you want the ground underfoot.
