WHERE

Leeds

What it’s like

A free hilltop walk with easy trails, city views over Leeds and plenty of room for dogs and picnics.

This is a walk, not an attraction with a gift shop at the end, and that's the appeal. The Lorry Bank and Scott Wood Lane Loop is 2.5 km and rated easy, which in plain terms means buggy-friendly ground for most of it, though the site is upfront that some paths and the steps sections won't work with wheelchairs or pushchairs. Kids who are happy stomping along a track will get the Meanwood Valley views and a proper sense of being up high over the city, which is the bit worth saving for the top of the climb rather than rushing through.

There's no entry fee, which makes it an easy one to slot into a free weekend rather than something you have to plan a budget around. Dogs are welcome and there are plenty of tracks to explore beyond the main loop, so if you've got a dog and kids both wanting a run about, this covers it without anyone getting bored halfway round.

Bring your own picnic if you want to make a real afternoon of it, since picnics are allowed on site. If you'd rather sit down properly, Meanwood Valley Farm's Barn café does coffee and cake, and North Brewing's Springwell Works nearby does craft beer and street food for the grown-ups once the kids have worn themselves out on the hill.

Parking is free on-street on Scott Hall, postcode LS7 2HT for the sat nav, and it's about a 10-minute taxi from Leeds city centre if you're not driving. There's no booking involved, you just turn up and walk.
