Steam Railways & Boat Trips in Glasgow
Right in the centre, the Waverley is the one to know about, a genuine paddle steamer down the Clyde from just £1 for kids five to sixteen (under-fives sail free). Fancy something faster, Seaforce Powerboats does bouncy rides on the Clyde with a doughnut-watching trip thrown in. Further out at Alexandria, Sweeney's Cruise Co runs loch cruises from Balloch, from an hour to a full two-hour island hop, with under-5s free too. A drive out to Falkirk gets you the Falkirk Wheel, a boat trip up and over the world's only rotating boat lift, suited to ages 5 and up. For toddlers, Waverley and Sweeney's both let under-5s sail free, which keeps costs down if plans change. Older children might prefer the pace of Seaforce's powerboat rides or a longer trip out to Callander for the 126-year-old steamship on Loch Katrine, with bikes and a play area to fill the rest of the day. Coach tours from Timberbush in Glasgow or Discover Scotland Tours in Paisley can bolt on a loch cruise if you want the Highlands without driving yourself. The Majestic Line's West Coast cruise out of Dunoon is for ages 12 and up, with meals cooked on board.
