What it’s like
A boat trip up and over the world's only rotating boat lift, with a visitor centre and café either side of it.
The whole point of the visit is the boat trip itself. You get on at the bottom, and the Wheel lifts the entire boat, water and all, up to the canal above, then you cruise along and come back down again. It takes about an hour door to door, which is a fair chunk of a morning for what's essentially one mechanical marvel doing its thing, but it's the sort of engineering that's genuinely hard to explain to a five-year-old until they're actually sitting in the boat watching it happen.
Kids under 5 go free, which is generous, though the ride itself is really pitched at 5 and up, both for the sitting-still-for-an-hour factor and for actually getting something out of it. A child ticket is £9.80, adults £17.95, and there's a concession rate too, though that one drops out over summer, so if you're relying on a grandparent's discount, June to September isn't your window. There are nine sailings a day starting at 10am, running through to just before 4pm, so you can build a visit around a specific slot rather than just turning up and hoping.
Booking's not compulsory but they're upfront that coach parties fill the boats regularly, and once a sailing's gone, it's gone. If you do book and plans change, be aware you can't cancel or amend inside 48 hours of the trip, which is a bit unforgiving if a toddler wakes up with a temperature the morning of. Outside the boat itself there's a visitor centre with a gift shop and a café.
It's fully accessible, with wheelchairs and mobility scooters able to board the boat if you flag it when booking, and dogs are welcome on leads around the site and in the visitor centre, just not the café unless they're assistance dogs.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
£17.95 for an adult, £9.80 for a child aged 5 to 15. Under 5s go free, and there's a concession rate of £16.50 that doesn't apply June to September.
Do we need to book ahead?
You don't have to, there's usually availability on the day, but coach parties fill boats up regularly and the boats have limited capacity. Booking ahead saves the risk of turning up to a sold-out sailing.
What age is it suitable for?
It's aimed at 5 and up. Under 5s are free to come along but the trip is really built around slightly older kids who can sit through the hour.
How long does the trip take?
About an hour, though it can vary a bit depending on traffic on the waterways.
What times do the boats run?
Nine sailings a day, starting at 10am and finishing at 3:50pm, roughly every 40 minutes to an hour.
Can I change my booking if plans fall through?
Not within 48 hours of the trip, they won't accept cancellations or amendments that close to departure. Outside that window they'll try to help but can't promise it.
Is it accessible for wheelchairs?
Yes, the site is fully accessible and wheelchairs or mobility scooters can board the boat, just mention it when you book. There's a disabled concessionary rate and carers go free.
Can we bring the dog?
Dogs are welcome on-site and in the visitor centre on leads, with water bowls dotted around. Only assistance dogs are allowed in the café itself.
