What it’s like
A small-boat cruise round the West Coast and Hebrides, with meals cooked on board and days ashore to explore.
This isn't a day trip, it's a cruise, and the under-12s rule tells you straight away who it's really for. Unless you've booked the whole boat as a private charter, children under 12 aren't allowed on board at all, so this is one for older kids and teenagers who can sit through a proper meal and cope with a few days at sea rather than little ones after a quick paddle.
Once you're on, the routine is exploring the West Coast and the Hebrides by boat with a chef doing all the meals, snacks and drinks, including house wine at dinner, all included in the price. There's a stocked bar too if the adults want something stronger. Most days there's a trip ashore, self-guided with maps provided, usually an hour or two, though nobody's forcing you off the boat if the weather's grim or you'd rather stay put with the wifi.
Getting on board is the bit to think about before you book. You have to be able to step into a boat tender and climb three fixed steps with help from the crew, plus there are stairs to the upper decks and cabins once you're on, so anyone with restricted mobility needs to weigh that up properly. Weather out on the west coast can turn quickly too, which is just the nature of the sea rather than anything the crew can control.
For a family with teenagers who fancy proper time on the water rather than an hour's boat trip round a loch, this is a different kind of holiday. It's worth going in knowing it's a multi-day thing with a set menu and a real commitment to the itinerary, not a spontaneous afternoon out.

Can children come on the cruise?
Only if you're booking a private charter for your family or group. Otherwise under-12s aren't allowed on board.
Is food included?
Yes, all meals, snacks, soft drinks and house wine with dinner are covered. There's a bar on board if you want to buy anything else.
Do we get off the boat to explore, or is it all at sea?
Most days there's a self-guided trip ashore, usually an hour or two, with maps given out. It's optional, not part of the set plan.
Is this manageable if someone in the group has restricted mobility?
You need to be able to step into the boat tender and climb three fixed steps with crew helping, and there are stairs to the cabins once aboard. Worth thinking through honestly before booking.
