What it’s like

Small-group coach tours out of Paisley to Loch Lomond, Inveraray Castle and the Highlands, with a guide talking you through it all.

This is a coach tour outfit, not a theme park, so what your kids actually do is sit, look out the window and listen to a guide who knows their stuff on Scottish history and scenery. Loch Lomond, Inveraray Castle and the Highlands are the sort of stops on offer, and coaches are small, max 16 passengers, so it never feels like being herded round with fifty strangers.

It suits the 5 to 15 bracket rather than younger kids. Under-5s aren't allowed on the scheduled group tours at all, which is fair enough given the coach seats and the long stretches between stops, but it does rule it out as a family day trip if you've got a toddler in tow. Stops come roughly every hour and a half, though not every one has a toilet, which is worth bearing in mind with a five-year-old who's just discovered lemonade.

Food and entry fees aren't part of the ticket. You stop for lunch along the way at cafes and shops, or bring your own, though no hot food is allowed on board. Attraction entry is extra too, except on the Shore Excursions from Greenock where Stirling Castle and Inveraray Castle are already included, so those two are the better value if castles are the whole point of the trip.

Booking's flexible, they'll take you right up to the day of departure, but they're upfront that advance booking is the safer bet if you don't want to miss out. Turn up 15 minutes early or you're out of luck, no refund or reschedule if you miss it. Coaches aren't wheelchair accessible, though foldable wheelchairs can be stored, and everyone on board needs to be able to manage stairs and sit in a standard coach seat.
