Beaches & Coast in Preston
Preston itself doesn't have a beach, so this list means a drive out along the coast. Southport Beach is the closest option, out at Southport, with miles of open sand near the Victorian seafront and plenty of room to build a sandcastle without tripping over anyone else's. Further out, a longer trip to Liverpool gets you Crosby Beach, free to wander any time and famous for its 100 cast-iron statues by Antony Gormley, and National Trust Formby, with sand dunes, pinewoods and two beach trails. For toddlers, Southport's flat open sand is the easiest going. Crosby suits older children who'll want to count statues and explore at low tide. Formby is the one to plan ahead for, booking is required, but it pays you back with sand wheelchairs on loan, baby change and on-site food, plus dogs are welcome throughout. No fires anywhere at Formby, so leave the barbecue at home.
