What it’s like
Sand dunes, pinewoods and two beach trails to explore, with sand wheelchairs on loan and no fires allowed to keep the wildlife happy.
This is dune and woodland walking rather than a set-up attraction: two natural play trails weave through the pinewoods, then boardwalks and sandy paths drop you onto the beach at either Lifeboat Road or Victoria Road. There's no entry fee, which helps, because the car parking makes up for it at £9 a car (free for National Trust members and Blue Badge holders).
Kids get stuck into the dunes and the woodland trails rather than anything built for them, so it suits ones who are happy scrambling over sand and roots rather than needing a slide to aim for. The site is upfront that it's a legally protected landscape with restricted facilities, so don't expect much beyond toilets and picnic tables. That's rather the point, but it's worth knowing before you arrive expecting a café with high chairs.
Food is limited to mobile ice cream and snack vans in the car parks through spring and summer, so a picnic is the sensible plan, and there are tables dotted around the site as well as at both car parks. Five sand wheelchairs are available to borrow free of charge, which is a genuinely useful detail if wheels usually rule out a beach day.
The catch is parking. Both car parks fill up fast on sunny days and the Trust actively suggests coming by train instead, with Formby and Freshfield stations a short walk away and Merseyrail running every 15 minutes. If you are bringing a coach or minibus, you'll need to book ahead, and none are allowed at weekends, school holidays or bank holidays at all.

Plan your visit
Is it free to get in?
Yes, there's no entry charge. You just pay for parking, which is £9 a car unless you're a National Trust member or Blue Badge holder.
Do we need to book?
Not for a normal family visit. Group visits, school trips, and any minibus or coach are the ones that need booking in advance.
Is there parking?
Two car parks, Lifeboat Road and Victoria Road, both £9 and both known to fill up on sunny days. Coming by train from Formby or Freshfield station is a decent backup.
What's there for kids to actually do?
Two natural play trails through the woodlands, plus beach access at both car parks via boardwalks and sandy paths. It's exploring dunes and trees rather than anything built for them.
Is there food on site?
Mobile ice cream and snack vans set up in the car parks during spring and summer. Otherwise it's a picnic, and there are tables at both car parks and around the site.
Can we bring a wheelchair onto the beach?
There are five sand wheelchairs with wide tyres that you can borrow free of charge for use on the sand.
Are dogs allowed?
Well-behaved dogs on close control, with an eye kept on wildlife.
Are fires or barbecues allowed?
They're banned across the site to protect the wildlife.
Is there a lifeguard on the beach?
RNLI lifeguards are on duty at Lifeboat Road from 10am to 6pm during spring and summer school holidays.
Can we bring a coach or minibus?
Only with advance booking, and not at all on weekends, school holidays or bank holidays.
