What it’s like

A wide stretch of sand dotted with 100 cast-iron statues by Antony Gormley, free to wander any time.

This is the beach with the statues. A hundred cast-iron figures by Antony Gormley stand scattered along the sand, all facing out to sea, and spotting how many you can count is the bit that turns a walk into an actual activity for kids who'd otherwise flag after ten minutes. Some are right up near the prom, others are further out and half swallowed by tide, so you get a different view depending on when you turn up.

There's no entry charge, which makes it an easy one to just decide on the day rather than plan around. Beyond the statues themselves, the site points to the wind farms out at sea and the ships passing by, which is a decent bit of "what's that then" material if you've got a child who asks a lot of questions. The sunsets get a mention too, and an evening low-tide visit is probably the one to save for last if you want the statues silhouetted properly.

It's an outdoor spot through and through. Sand and sea also mean the usual beach rules apply, keep an eye on tides and don't let anyone go wandering out to the far statues without knowing how the water's moving.
