What it’s like

Woodland walks, axe throwing and fire lighting in a working wood near Uckfield, with fungus hunts and pottery thrown in.

This is a proper working wood rather than a manicured park, and the activity list shows it: axe throwing, bushcraft and fire lighting, forest school sessions, art and creature crafts, pottery, and fungus hunts depending on when you turn up. It's the kind of visit where a two-hour wander turns into an afternoon once the kids find the fire pit or start hunting for fungi under the trees.

Entry is £4 per adult or child, or £15 for a household, which is fair for a whole day outdoors and cheaper than most indoor soft play. It's open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, with Monday openings added during Easter, May half-term and October half-term. Picnics are allowed if you want to bring your own food, and there's food on site too.

Winter's a different story. The wood closes to the public at 2pm on 21 December and doesn't reopen until 3 February, so this isn't one for a Boxing Day walk. There's also a Christmas Fayre for three weekends at the end of November and start of December, and the woods close for walks during that period, so check the dates if a quiet forest ramble is the plan rather than a fayre.

Birthday parties have a few routes in: Little Forest School can run one for you, a potter called Julia Dunstan does pottery parties, or you can hire the space yourself for four hours if you're not a member. Both card and cash are accepted, which is one less thing to think about on the day.

Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, most of the year. Mondays are added during Easter, May half-term and October half-term.

Yes, a few ways. Little Forest School can run one, a potter runs pottery parties, or you can hire the space yourself for four hours if you're not already a member.

Can we bring our own food?

Picnics are allowed, and there's also food available on site.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link listed, so it reads as a turn up and pay on the day sort of place, though it's worth glancing at their social media in case an event changes the hours.

Can we pay by card?

Both card and cash are accepted.
