Woodland & Forest in Brighton

None of these woods are on Brighton's doorstep, so this is one for a proper outing rather than an after-school potter. A longer trip out to Uckfield gets you Wilderness Wood, a working wood where kids can try axe throwing and fire lighting for £4 upwards, plus fungus hunts if the season's right. Out at Forest Row, Ashdown Forest is free to explore, all open heathland and trails, and a good one for Winnie-the-Pooh spotting and watching the ponies graze. Near Eastbourne, Friston Forest has miles of walking and cycling paths through the trees, also free to wander though the two main car parks charge. For toddlers, Ashdown Forest's open paths are easier going than dense woodland. Older kids with energy to spend will get more from Friston's cycling trails or a go at axe throwing in Uckfield, which also does birthday parties if you fancy something different. All three are outdoor and dog friendly where it matters, and Ashdown Forest has a cafe and accessible toilets if you want less to carry.
