Walcott Beach
WHERE
Norwich
What it’s like
A sandy stretch on the north Norfolk coast for a paddle, a swim and a proper dig with a bucket and spade.
The sand is the whole point here. There's room to dig a decent hole, build something ambitious, and get straight into the sea when the digging gets boring. It's a simple beach day rather than an attraction with a gift shop at the end, which suits some families down to the ground and might feel a bit thin if you're after more than sand and water.
There's a café for when the sandwiches run out and toilets nearby, so you're not planning your whole visit around a flask and a bush. Bring your own everything else though, windbreak, bodyboards, the works, because this is a bring-your-own kind of beach.
One thing worth knowing before you turn up on a sunny Saturday: large camper vans tend to park up along the seafront and can make the place feel more crowded than the beach itself actually is. Go early if you want a clear run at a good spot.
Facilities
Plan your visit
Is it a sandy beach or shingle?
Sandy, so it's a proper spade-and-bucket job rather than pebbles underfoot.
Can you swim there?
Yes, swimming is one of the main things people go for.
Is there anywhere to get food?
There's a café on site, useful when the packed lunch disappears faster than planned.
Are there toilets?
There are toilets nearby, which is one less thing to worry about with young kids.
