What it’s like

A free contemporary art gallery in Gateshead showing work by critically engaged artists, open Wednesday to Saturday afternoons.

This is a spot for looking at exhibitions rather than anything hands-on: the gallery puts on shows of work by artists who are, as they put it, critically engaged, and you wander round and take it in. It suits an afternoon when you fancy something quieter than the usual big attractions, and getting in costs nothing at all.

The opening hours are tight though. Wednesday to Saturday, midday to 5pm, so there's no popping in on a Sunday afternoon or after work on a weekday. If you're planning around it, build your day out from that window rather than the other way round.

It's an easy one to reach without a car: five minutes on foot from Gateshead Metro or the Interchange bus station, so if you're already in town it's a short stroll rather than a proper trek. Being indoors, it's a decent option if the weather's turned and you want somewhere dry to fill an hour.
