What it’s like
Pick your yarn colours and tuft your own rug with a machine, taking it home the same day.
You sit down at a tufting machine, a proper handheld one that weighs about 1.5kg, and build up your own rug in yarn from the colours on offer. There's no drawing skill required. The taster session runs at £30 and the full workshop is £60, and either way you walk out with the rug you made, not a photo of one.
It's a minimum age of 8, and anyone between 8 and 14 needs an adult with them the whole time, so this isn't a drop-and-go activity for that age bracket. Turning up more than half an hour late is a real problem here, since the workshop is paced to get everyone finished, and latecomers may not complete their rug. Book ahead too: spots go online up to a day before, but same-day walk-ins aren't the plan.
If you're bringing a group, two people booking together can save up to 20% at checkout, which makes it a decent shout for a birthday. Water's provided and small snacks are fine, and if you've got long hair a tie is worth packing since the machines don't love it loose. The studio's wheelchair accessible, you just need to flag it in the special requirements when you book. Parking's a short walk away at either the NCP on Market Street or Crown Street Excel, both around £3 to £5 for two hours.
