What it’s like
A free look round a Victorian neo-gothic church, with organ recitals and a family service that doesn't need you to sit still and behave.
Guided tours take you round the Victorian neo-gothic building, and on Fridays there's a free lunchtime organ recital that fills the whole nave with sound, which is the sort of thing that either bores a child rigid or properly impresses them. There's also Choral Evensong if you fancy something more traditional, and a Family Church session that's pitched at all ages rather than expecting silence and stillness the way a normal service might.
It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to try even if you're not sure your kids will take to it. The opening hours are tight though, Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 2pm, and shut on Mondays, so this isn't a spontaneous rainy-afternoon fallback if you turn up at the wrong time. Step-free access runs right through from the west and east entrances to the nave, the City of Leeds Room, the Lady Chapel and the toilets, and there's a ramp to the main doors under the tower, so a buggy or wheelchair shouldn't be a problem.
Because it's a working church, you might land in the middle of wedding preparations, a concert rehearsal or an organist practising, and access gets restricted during services and events. That's not really a downside so much as the nature of the place, but it does mean two visits on two different days can look quite different. It's a ten minute walk from the railway station and three minutes from the bus station, so it's easy enough to fold into a wider day in Leeds without needing to drive anywhere.
