What it’s like

A 45-minute self-guided walk into a real cavern hung with Blue John stone, but it's steps and slopes, not a pram job.

You use your own phone as the guide here, wandering through a cavern that's been carved out of the hillside, with the Blue John stone the whole place is famous for lit up along the way. It's about 45 minutes point to point, and the site is upfront that it's a steep climb to get in, with plenty of steps and the natural contours of the hill to deal with both under and overground. Good shoes, not flip flops.

It suits kids from about five up, old enough to manage the steps and sit still for an audio commentary without needing carrying. There's no getting a pram down there and wheelchairs aren't suitable either, though they say walking disabled visitors may be accommodated if you ring ahead. Above ground there's a café hatch for snacks and hot drinks, a shop and museum to poke round, and free parking on site so at least that bit's easy.

Booking's online and non-negotiable if you want the cheaper rates, entry slots run every five minutes with up to ten people per group, and turning up without a booking means paying full price at the door. Early bird slots between 9:30 and 10:50am knock a couple of quid off adult and child tickets, which is worth grabbing if you're an early riser anyway. Around Easter they hide giant eggs along the tour route, and there's a Carols by Candlelight event in the Witch's Cave if you fancy something a bit different in December.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£16 for an adult and £10 for a child aged 5 to 17, booked online. Early bird slots between 9:30 and 10:50am bring that down to £14 and £8.

Do we need to book in advance?

Yes, it's online booking only. Turn up without one and you'll pay full price rather than any discounted rate.

How long does the visit take?

The self-guided audio tour is about 45 minutes.

Is it suitable for a toddler?

Not really, it's aimed at ages 5 and up. There are a lot of steps and the cavern isn't suitable for prams.

Can we bring a wheelchair or pushchair?

The cavern isn't suitable for either. Walking disabled visitors may be accommodated if you call ahead to discuss.

Is there parking?

Free parking on site.

What if we're late for our slot?

They'll try to fit you into the next available slot, but if it's after 10:55am you'll be charged full price.

What's there to eat?

A café hatch does sweet and savoury snacks and hot and cold drinks, open 10am to 4:30pm from March to October.

What should we wear?

Suitable clothing and sturdy footwear, since there are steps both above and below ground on natural hillside terrain.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs are welcome.

Is it open all year?

Aside from Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Hours run 9:30am to 5pm March to October and 9:30am to 4pm the rest of the year.
