What it’s like

Story times, baby sessions and a monthly cinema night, all in a small local library with free entry.

The story time and baby time sessions are the regular draw here, and the summer reading challenge gives you a reason to keep coming back once the school holidays hit. It's a proper community library rather than a big attraction, so don't expect a full day out, but for an hour with a small child on a wet Tuesday it does the job.

The bit that's genuinely different is the cinema. Once a month the children's library gets cleared out and turned into a screen, with a Thursday matinee at 3pm that's free for the over 65s but open to everyone, and a Friday evening showing at 7pm. Advance tickets for the evening film are £5, or £7 if you just turn up on the door, and there's a £3 raffle ticket in the mix too. Booking's done the old-fashioned way, in person or by phone, and you pay either at booking or on the day.

Hours are a bit patchy if you're planning a visit around them. Monday afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday daytime, and short Friday and Saturday morning slots, but it's shut Thursday and Sunday entirely. There's a small car park on Lemont Road with disabled spaces, plus street parking on Baslow Road if that's full, and a few bus routes stop nearby if you're coming without a car.
