What it’s like

Free storytimes, babytime and craft sessions through the week, though the steps at the door are a real faff with a buggy.

The calendar here is doing a lot of work for a small library. Babytime on Tuesdays is storytelling, crafts and nursery rhymes for 0 to 2 year olds, and Crafty Critters follows on the same day for the older ones. Monday's Storytime is aimed at preschoolers, Friday brings both Stay and Play for the little ones and Friday Fun for 5 to 10 year olds, and there's a Summer Reading Challenge running too. It's a proper week of things to turn up to rather than just a room to browse in.

Entry's free and most of it stays that way, though a few sessions like Storytime, Crafty Critters and Friday Fun ask for a £2-£3 suggested donation. That's fair enough for what you get, and nothing on the site suggests you need to book ahead, so you can just turn up on the day.

The building's the catch. There's no lift or ramp at the main entrance, which is up several flights of steps, and the garden's reached by a steep driveway with a shallow step too. If you're pushing a buggy or using a wheelchair, this one's going to take some planning, and it's worth knowing before you set off rather than finding out on the doorstep.

Hours are a bit unusual as well. It's open Monday to Friday during the day but closed all day Thursday, and Saturday's a short 10 to 1 window with Sunday shut completely. Parking's limited to on-street spaces with the first 20 minutes free, but four buses stop within a few minutes' walk, which is probably the easier way in given the steps.
