What it’s like

Learn to weld properly, from a one-day taster to a two-day course, in a working studio near Plymouth's Barbican.

This is a course for adults who fancy actually making something out of metal rather than just watching someone else do it. The Introduction to Welding day gets you started for £109, or you can go further with the two-day course at £299 if you want more than a taste. There's also a Fundamentals to Metalwork option at £135 and TIG welding taught by the hour at £60, which is handy if you've already got the basics and want to sharpen a specific skill.

One-to-one lessons run at £60 an hour too, so if you'd rather not learn in a group, that's on the table. Bookings go through the website and you pick your date and course before checking out, which is straightforward enough, though it's worth reading the terms before you commit since cancellations are governed by them.

Once you've done a course, you're not just cut loose. Past attendees can hire a welding bench by the half day or full day and use the machinery on site, with Richard around to help if you get stuck. There's also a monthly Academy option at £9.99 if you're not local and want ongoing coaching rather than a one-off visit.

The catch is parking. There's nothing on site and you can't park outside because of restrictions, so you're looking at pay and display at Lockyers Quay or the Barbican Harbour Car Park. It's only two minutes from a place to stay near the Barbican if you're making a day or weekend of it, and bike parking is there if you'd rather skip the car altogether.
