What it’s like
A free three-hour guided walk round Manchester city centre, starting at the Chinese Arch and ending near Free Trade Hall.
This is a proper walk, not a stroll. It runs to three hours, sometimes 3.5 if the group's chatty, split roughly half walking and half the guide talking, with one planned break in the middle. If you've got younger kids who can't sit still for a history lesson on their feet, that's a long stretch to hold their attention, so pick your day and your kids carefully.
You meet at the Chinese Arch in Chinatown at 10am, every day, and there's no minimum group size, so it runs even if it's just you and the guide. The route covers Manchester's culture and everyday life rather than a fixed list of sights, and the guide finishes up near Free Trade Hall with time for questions and local tips once the tour itself is done.
It costs nothing to join, which makes it an easy add to a Manchester day out, but you're expected to tip the guide at the end since that's how these free tours actually work. There are two different routes on offer, seeing different parts of the city, so if you're around for a couple of days you could do both. Bring water and sort the toilet situation before you start, because the break is the only planned stop.
You can leave partway through if it's all getting a bit much for the kids, just tell the guide at the start so they know not to wait for you.
