What it’s like
Talks and lectures on science, history and ideas, open to anyone from 16 up with a ticket, no membership needed.
This is a lecture society, so what you're bringing a teenager along for is a proper talk, the sort where someone who actually knows their subject stands up and explains it properly. There's no age range given, but membership only opens up at 16, which tells you the audience skews adult and the events are pitched that way. If you've got a sixth-former who's genuinely into science, history or ideas rather than a day out with slides and snacks, this is more their speed than most things on a Huddlepin list.
You don't have to join to go. General admission tickets cover most events at £15, or £6 if your teenager's a student, and booking is required so you can't just turn up on the night. That student price is decent value for a proper talk, and it's worth getting them to bring ID or proof if that's how the discount works.
Membership is a separate thing entirely, and it isn't cheap if you're weighing it up as a family. Individual membership runs £12.50 a month or £135 a year, with a joint option at £22.50 a month or £240 a year for two people. Students get their own rate, £5 a month or £50 a year, which is far more sensible if it's just your teenager who wants to keep coming back rather than the whole household signing up.
