What it’s like

A guided walk round Manchester's city centre landmarks, tip-based and running two to two and a half hours.

This is a walking tour, so the plan is simple: you turn up, join a small group, and someone who knows the city properly walks you round the landmarks and a few spots you'd probably miss on your own. The standard city centre tour is tip-based, meaning you pay what you reckon it was worth at the end rather than a fixed fee upfront. There's also an afternoon walking tour at £15 if you want a different route through the city, and Spanish-language versions too, including a shorter express one that's also tip-based.

Whichever tour you pick, you're looking at 2 to 2.5 hours on your feet, which is a decent stretch for younger kids but fine for older ones who can handle a proper walk without moaning every ten minutes. Tours run daily from 10am to 8.30pm, so there's flexibility on when you go, but they do want you to book ahead. Groups are kept small and places are limited, so turning up on spec is a gamble you might lose.

The tip-based pricing is a nice idea in theory. It puts the pressure on the guide to actually be good, which is fair, but it does mean you need to have cash or a card ready at the end and decide on the spot what the morning was worth. If you'd rather know the cost in advance, the £15 afternoon tour takes that decision off your hands.

Booking is free either way and you can cancel or change it beforehand if plans shift, which takes some of the stress out of committing to a specific time slot with kids in tow.
