What it’s like

Pick a piece of pottery, paint it however you like, and take home a plate, mug or animal figure a few days later.

You choose a plain piece of pottery, plates, cups, vases, figurines, tea light holders or plaques, and paint it however you fancy. The site also does clay sculpting workshops and air-drying clay sessions if brush work isn't the thing that day, and there's the option of baby handprints or the family dog's paw print on a piece too, which is a nice one for a keepsake rather than a toy that gets lost by Tuesday.

The pricing is refreshingly simple: £15.50 covers the pottery painting, and that's it. No studio fee, no firing fee bolted on afterwards, which is more than you can say for some places that nickel and dime you once you're through the door. Blue Light Card holders get 10% off too, including on parties.

Opening hours shift about through the week, so Monday to Thursday it shuts at 2.30pm, Friday it stays open till 6, and weekends run a normal daytime slot. Worth building your visit around whichever day suits, since a 2.30pm finish on a Tuesday doesn't leave much room for a leisurely session if you turn up mid-afternoon.

Birthday parties run as two packages, both needing a minimum of 8 children. Package 1 is £15.50 a head for 1.5 hours with juice and a cupcake, Package 2 is £19.50 for 2 hours with pizza, fries and a ceramic keepsake carrying every guest's fingerprint, which for parties over 10 becomes a plate with the birthday child's name and age instead. A £40 deposit secures the date, with the rest due at the end. There's plenty of parking nearby, and it's a couple of minutes' walk from The Piece Hall and the bus and train station if you're combining it with something else in town.
