What it’s like
Wheel throwing and hand-building pottery in a fully accessible studio in Slaithwaite, with birthday sessions on offer too.
This is a proper working pottery studio rather than a paint-your-own-mug shop. Kids get stuck into wheel throwing on one of nine professional wheels, or hand-building with slabs, pugmills and a handle extruder if the wheel feels like too much for small hands. It's based in a former loading bay at Britannia Mills, redesigned to be step-free with custom-built throwing benches, so it's genuinely easy to get round with a wheelchair or a buggy.
Birthday and hen parties run as 1.5 hour sessions, with bespoke options if you want something different. One thing to know before you book: firing isn't included unless you're a member. The site is clear that the firing service sits inside their Membership Programme only, so what your child makes on the day might not come home fired and glazed unless you've signed up for that.
Slaithwaite itself is worth building the visit around. It's a proper village with independent shops, galleries, cafés and a canal to wander along afterwards, so a pottery session can easily turn into a half day out rather than a quick drop-in. There's an on-site materials and pottery shop too if you want to carry on at home, plus a kitchenette on site.
Getting there is straightforward by train, bus or car, with parking nearby and an accessible toilet on site.
