What it’s like

A proper theatre programme plus mini-golf, crown green bowls and tennis outside if the show isn't the whole plan.

This one splits nicely into two halves. Indoors there's a full theatre and cinema programme, plus youth theatre, dance and drama groups split by age (5 to 7, 8 to 11, 12 to 16), so if your kids get the bug there's somewhere for them to go back to. Tickets start from £15, which isn't pocket change for a family outing, but concessions apply on most shows for under-16s and the 65-plus crowd, so check what a particular performance is charging before you assume the worst.

Outside, the gardens have 18-hole mini-golf at £3 a child and £5 an adult, or £12 for a family of four, which is the sensible option if there's more than two of you. Crown green bowls is pay-as-you-go for two hours, £2 for a junior and £6 for an adult, a properly old-fashioned way to spend an afternoon that most kids have never tried. Tennis and padel courts are there too if you fancy a knock about before or after the show.

Practical bits: parking on site is £3.50 all day but free if you're just coming for an evening show, which is a nice touch. The foyer opens 45 minutes before curtain up, and every child needs their own ticket, babies included, so factor that into the cost if you've got a little one who'll spend half the show on your lap anyway. Under-16s must be with an adult throughout, no dropping teenagers off to fend for themselves.

Access is well thought through, with wheelchair spaces in both the Main House and the smaller Chapman Studio, and a free companion ticket going with a valid Access Card. It's an easy walk from the train station or a nearby bus stop if you're leaving the car at home.
