What it’s like

A community theatre in Barnsley putting on panto and family shows, with parking right opposite.

This is a proper theatre rather than a soft play or an attraction with a car park full of coaches, so what you're getting is a seat, a show, and the buzz of a live audience. It's the kind of thing worth building an evening or afternoon around, panto season especially, when the whole point is sitting your kids down somewhere dark and letting the actors do the work for once.

The box office keeps sensible hours, Tuesday to Thursday mornings, plus an hour before whatever's on that day if you've left it late or fancy a walk-up ticket. There's food on site, so you're not stuck planning a meal around the performance time, though what's on offer isn't something I can tell you beyond the fact that it's there.

Parking is dead easy for a town centre venue. There's Pay and Display right on Westgate opposite the theatre, and it's free for three hours at weekends as long as you display your ticket, which takes the sting out of it if you're only there for a matinee. Churchfield is a two minute walk away as a backup if Westgate's full. If you're coming by bus or train, Barnsley Interchange is under ten minutes on foot.

Wheelchair access is listed, which matters for a building like this where older theatres sometimes cause a faff with steps and narrow aisles.

Is there parking nearby?

Can we get there by public transport?

Barnsley Interchange is under ten minutes' walk, with buses and trains running from there.

Is it accessible for wheelchairs?

The theatre lists wheelchair access, which is handy for a building of this age.
