What it’s like

A proper old-school Penistone cinema with panto in January, family film screenings, and seats upstairs you'll have to climb stairs for.

This is a proper old cinema, not a multiplex, and it shows in a good way. Downstairs in the stalls or up in the circle, you'll get family film screenings through the year plus a full pantomime, Cinderella, running through January 2027. If you fancy something a bit different there's the Penistone Film Festival too, over a weekend in October.

Family tickets are the sensible way in if there's more than two of you, £28 for stalls or £32 for the circle, and that covers two adults and two kids, or one adult and three kids. Book online and it's a pound cheaper per ticket than paying at the box office, though from April 2026 there's a £1 booking fee added on either way, so the online saving gets eaten a bit. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are worth knowing about if you've got the Compare the Market app, since it gets you two cinema tickets for the price of one.

One thing to plan around: there's no lift up to the circle, so if you've got a pushchair or dodgy knees, stick to the stalls. And under-12s need a responsible adult with them the whole visit, not just dropped off and collected, which is fair enough but worth knowing before you buy tickets for separate age groups. There's a kiosk by the entrance and a main bar downstairs for snacks and drinks, but you can't bring your own alcohol in and hot food from outside isn't allowed either, so factor that in if you were planning a quick chippy tea beforehand.

Parking is free right next to the building, with EV charging and disabled spaces, and the train station's a short walk away if you fancy leaving the car at home. It opens most days of the year bar Christmas Day, though box office hours are more limited than the screening times, so it's easiest to sort tickets online rather than turning up hoping to buy at the door.

Plan your visit

How much are tickets?

Adult stalls or circle seats start at £8.50 online, or £9.50 at the box office. Concessions are £7.50 online, £8.50 at the box office.

Is a family ticket cheaper?

£28 for stalls or £32 for the circle, covering two adults and two kids, or one adult and three kids.

Do we need to book online or can we just turn up?

You can buy at the box office, but it's open limited hours, Monday and Thursday mornings plus around screening times. Booking online avoids that faff and it's a pound cheaper per ticket too.

Is there a booking fee?

From April 2026 there's a £1 per ticket fee whichever way you book.

Can my toddler come along?

There's no minimum age listed, but under-12s need a responsible adult with them for the whole visit, not just dropped off.

Is there step-free access?

The stalls have level access and six wheelchair spaces, but there's no lift up to the circle, so upstairs seats mean stairs.

Can we bring our own food and drink?

Alcohol has to be bought on site, you can't bring your own in. Hot food from outside isn't allowed either, though there's a kiosk and a main bar for snacks.

What's the parking like?

Free parking right next to the cinema, including EV charging points and disabled spaces, plus ample on-street parking nearby.

Can we get there by train?

Penistone train station is a short walk away, on the Northern Rail line from Huddersfield, Barnsley and Sheffield.

Is there a cheap night for films?

Meerkat Movies gets you two-for-one cinema tickets every Tuesday or Wednesday through the Compare the Market app. It only applies to films, not the pantomime or live events.

When's the pantomime on?

Cinderella runs through January 2027.

Is it open all year?

Yes, it's open most days except Christmas Day.
