What it’s like

A big stretch of open grass and woodland walks in central London, free to wander from 5am to midnight.

Open green space in the middle of the city, and the pull here is simple: grass to spread a blanket on and shaded paths through the trees when you want a change from pavement walking. The site lists sunbathing and picnicking as the main things people do, along with walks through the woodland bits, so it's less about a set attraction and more about turning up with a rug and letting the afternoon go where it goes.

That makes it flexible for a family day. A toddler can wander the paths without much risk of getting lost, and older kids have got the space to wander further ahead without you losing sight of them. There's no entry fee, which is the obvious appeal if you're trying to fill a free afternoon in London without spending anything beyond the picnic itself.

Gates for pedestrians are open from 5am to midnight. Picnics are allowed and there's food available on site too. Just don't expect a playground or anything structured, this is grass and trees rather than climbing frames.
