What it’s like
A free woodland walk along the River Foss where you hunt out tiny fairy houses tucked among the trees.
Spotting fairy doors and little houses along the riverbank is the whole point here, and it works because it's small scale and free rather than a big built attraction. It's a community-led project, so the houses have that handmade look rather than anything glossy, which is part of the charm. Along the way there's a bit of folklore and nature to pick up on too, if your kids are the sort who ask questions about everything.
Thirty minutes covers it at a normal pace, though if you've got a four-year-old who wants to peer into every fairy door, budget longer. The path has some uneven and narrow bits, so it's not one for a buggy you want to keep dry-shod and smooth, though there are flatter sections if you stick to those. Dogs are welcome on the lead of your choice.
There's nothing on-site by way of toilets or a café, and the nearest facilities are at Sainsbury's, so sort snacks and a loo stop before you set off or plan to nip there afterwards. Parking is a walk away at Monk Bar Car Park, though there's bike parking right by the entrance if you're cycling over. Worth knowing that some of the fairy houses get tucked away or less visible over winter, so a spring or summer visit gives you more to find.
It costs nothing to walk, though the trail relies on donations to keep the houses maintained.
